Starting Your Assessment Journey
You can ask your GPΒ to refer you to KT Healthcare for an autism assessment under NHS Right to Choose. Your GPΒ will make the referral on your behalf.
Step 1
Speak to Your GP
Speak to Your GP
Book an appointment with your GP to discuss your concerns. During your appointment, let your GP know that you would like to use your legal NHS Right to Choose to be referred to KT Healthcare for an autism assessment.
β
Your GP will then send us your referral along with any relevant supporting information.
Step 2
Referral & Questionnaires
Referral and Questionnaires
Once we receive your referral, our team will review the information provided and may contact your GP if additional details are needed.
β
We will then send you questionnaires to complete about your development and current experiences. We ask that you aim to return the questionnaires within 2 weeks.
β
You will also be asked to provide details of an informant (such as a partner, family member, or someone who knows you well), who will be invited to complete a questionnaire to provide additional insight.
β
This stage typically takes up to 1 month from receiving your referral and all required information. Please note that all referrals are reviewed, and acceptance is not guaranteed at this stage.
Step 3
Assessment & Outcome
Assessment and Outcome
Once your questionnaires have been reviewed, you will be added to our waiting list, which is currently approximately 14β16 weeks minimum. Please note this may vary depending on your local Integrated Care Board (ICB). When you reach the top of the list, we will contact you to arrange your assessment appointments:
Appointment 1 β ADOS:
You will attend a one-hour session with a clinician, involving a range of structured activities and conversation as part of an observational assessment.
β
Appointment 2 β ADI-R:
A clinician will meet with your informant (such as a partner, family member, or someone who knows you well) for up to 2.5 hours to explore your developmental history and discuss your current experiences across different settings.
β
Following your assessment, your case will be reviewed by our clinical team in a multidisciplinary meeting, usually within 1β2 weeks.
β
You will then receive a call to discuss the outcome, typically 3β4 weeks after your final appointment, and a full written report should be completed and shared within 4β5 weeks after your feedback appointment.

What is Autism?
Autism is a lifelong neurodevelopmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts with others, and experiences the world around them. It is a spectrum, which means it presents differently in every individual, with varying strengths, challenges, and support needs.
Gaining a diagnosis often brings relief and understanding, helping to validate their unique history and perspective.

Social relationships
Understanding how individuals navigate social interactions, communication patterns, and relationship dynamics, including both strengths and challenges in these areas.
Task organisation and time planning
Assessing executive function skills including time management, organisation, planning abilities, and how these impact daily routines and work performance.
Emotional regulation
Evaluating emotional processing, self-regulation strategies, responses to change, and how emotions are experienced and managed in different situations.
Sensory overload
Exploring sensory sensitivities and responses to different environments, sounds, lights, textures, and other sensory stimuli that may impact wellbeing.

An 'informant' is someone who knows you well and who can be part of your autism assessment. Ideally this is a parent/guardian who knew you age 4-5. If this is not possible for you, an 'informant' can be a partner or friend who knows you well.
Yes. Our clinicians are specially trained to recognise how autism can present differently, including the impact of masking, and take this into account throughout the assessment process.
No. We will gather information from other settings your child spends time in, such as groups, clubs, or time with relatives or friends, to support a thorough assessment.
